The Funnest Lineup on the Sunshine Coast… Doesn't Have a Single Agro Bloke In

There's a version of surfing nobody warns you about going in. It's not the paddling, or the salt water up the nose, or even the wipeouts, you get used to those faster than you'd think. It's the lineup itself. A pack of blokes who've clearly been doing this since before you were born, eyeing the peak like it's theirs by birthright, elbows out, while you're just trying to find a bit of open water to actually surf.

So we built a different lineup…

Surf Sister Saturdays started as a fairly obvious idea that somehow nobody around here was doing properly: put a group of women in the water together, with someone actually coaching rather than just supervising from the sand, and take the whole thing somewhere you can hear yourself think. No ego, no silent scoreboard, no fighting eight blokes for the same peak. And this isn't a beginners-only club, we have an intermediate program for the women who who are already comfortable on a wave and just want a crew worth surfing with, not a crowd worth avoiding.

We run it out of Peregian Beach, and that's not an accident. It's one of the quieter stretches on this part of the coast, fewer boards in the water, more room to actually read a wave instead of fighting for it, which matters just as much for an intermediate surfer trying to refine a bottom turn as it does for someone finding their feet. Sunshine Beach and Noosa have their charm, but they also have their crowds. Peregian gives you space to work on something without an audience.

What we've noticed, session after session, is that the surfing improvement is almost secondary to what happens around it. Women who turned up solo and slightly unsure are, within a few weeks, turning up early just to chat before anyone's even waxed a board. That's not a marketing line, it's what happens when you put people through something mildly adrenaline-spiking together, on a beach with enough breathing room for it to actually feel good, week after week. Shared stoke is a better icebreaker than anything we could have planned.
